The last thing you want when you have a deadline is for your documents to be rejected because you didn’t understand the court rules.

Before filing, get a copy of your local court rules (every court has them posted on their website somewhere); then check:

    1. How’s your formatting?
Different courts have different requirements with respect to how e-filed documents are to be formatted. It’s up to you to make sure the font style in your document is correct (check local rules).

If you need to make global changes to your font, press Ctrl+A to select everything in the document. Then you can easily change the whole thing to the correct font style.

Don’t forget to check to make sure your margins are correct and that you have consecutively numbered all pages, including exhibits.

    2. Is it searchable?
    Most Courts mandate text searchability.

For a quick way to check if your document has the required search capabilities, press Ctrl+F.

If your document can be searched, your search terms will be highlighted based on whatever text you put into the search box.

If your PDF is not searchable, then you need to OCR your documents if it is required by the court rules.

    3. Have you redacted confidential information?

    4. Are the documents signed appropriately?

Each court system has its own rules about how attorneys can sign documents electronically, so make sure you are familiar with the rules that apply in your venue.

Hope these quick tips help with your e-filing.
